Tile ID Finder Plugins
Hey everyone!This weekend, I found myself wanting to shake things up a bit. The usual design grind was starting to feel repetitive, and I craved a break. A detour, if you will. So, I decided to dive back into the world of RPG Maker MV and MZ, and guess what? I emerged with a shiny new tool for all you game devs out there: the 'Tile ID Finder' plugin.
Why this Plugin?
Ever been stuck trying to figure out tile IDs the old-school way? Yeah, me too. It's a hassle, and while there might be some solutions floating around, I felt the itch to create something myself. Plus, I figured I couldn’t be the only one who'd appreciate a quicker way to spot those tricky tile IDs.
The Adventure Begins...
Jumping back into RPG Maker after what felt like ages was a trip. So much had changed, yet a lot remained deeply familiar. Fueled by weekend zeal, I set to work.
My first idea? The “onclick” method. Simple, right? Click on a tile, get the ID. But RPG Maker MZ, with its layered tiles, threw me a curveball. When characters trot over bridges or chill on rooftops, it's not always the base tile you see. So, the "onclick" idea, while neat on paper, was a swing and a miss in practice.
But, after a bit of tinkering (and more coffee than I'd like to admit), I landed on something smoother. Now, when your character moves to a tile, boom! The Tile ID pops up. It goes through the layers, top to bottom, finding the exact Tile ID where the player stands. And for the testers out there, this shows up in the game message window and the console.
To avoid a flood of IDs every step, I made it so the Tile ID shows up only when the player stops. And those pesky non-walkable tiles? I tweaked settings to make them all walkable during tests.
