Down scaling your enemy illustrations without making them look blurry
*TLDR it's a sharpness filter.*I've been doing digital art since about 2015, and I like to make my own illustrations for my game projects when I can. A problem I've run into, however, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. Is that once you finish an illustration, if you paint it at a high resolution, it can be tricky to shrink it down to fit into RPG Maker.
The way I've done this in the past is to only shrink it as much as I absolutely half too, to fit it into RPG Maker, which results in enemies being much bigger than the sprites fighting them, depending on which battle system you're using.
There is a very simple solution to this, which is quite simply to throw a sharpness filter over the image. I use Krita to do this which is a free illustration program, however, It's a very common filter, and any Art program worth its salt should have it.
Below are the examples of its effects, without any further tweaking.
^ This is the largest you can really have an enemy be in an RPG maker game, if you want multiple enemies at once, without any clipping (running off the edges of the screen)
^ This a much preferable size for minions or your average enemy, and can fit quite a few without a problem. Note that there are some jagged edges if you go down this far and activate the filter, however you can go back in and paint over and fix these problems by hand if you'd like to.
To do this just take an airbrush and paint behind the jagged edges, or, a more efficient way would be to duplicate the painting and then apply the sharpness filter to the top copy. That way the blurry version peaks out a bit and softens the edges.
I've done this method on the right image, with the left being only the sharpened image. ( the effect is most notable on the front of the back leg)
Here's where it's located in Krita, and I'm sure it's located similarly in other programs.
As for what exactly a sharpness filter does, it essentially emphasizes edges by outlining quick shifts in value by lightening the lighter side and darkening the darker size immediately next to the edge.
