Graphic and eventing considerations for making events interact with the player

Wasn't sure where to put this so I decided on the usual place.

In a nutshell: I'm dying to know how "complex" graphical interactions are made. Meaning that I don't want to just animate the player sprite or an event by itself (which I know a few ways to do already), but also animate an event or something on the map interacting with the player.

Here are some examples, though I'm not looking for them specifically:
1) A bookshelf falls on top of the player and squishes them.
2) The player and a NPC hug or kiss each other.
3) The player opens a cabinet and reaches up into it

One of the bigger questions I have is this. Take the characters hugging as the example. At some point, do you switch to a single event graphic rather than two separate ones? (Then turn them back into separate events when done?) How do you do this and avoid an obvious visual hiccup?

Here is a video of death scenes in the horror game Misao. They are very interactive and detailed. I thought they might be a good example and would love to come close with my animations.

Thanks for checking this out.
