Map Making with Levi W! [not RM maps]

Hello!

I'm going to show you how to make some purdy maps.

I use GIMP, so this tutorial will deal solely in GIMP. And as none of the tools I'll be using are unique to GIMP, it will work with other editors... but I will not offer support for other editors. This tutorial is mainly about creating paper/parchment/textures in GIMP.

[Quick thank you to Celianna! This is obviously inspired by/stolen from her Map Maker! "If Celianna already has a Map Maker... why make this tutorial?" Well, if you want completely original material (no credits) this is a way to do it. It also offers more flexibility in the way of colour, textures, etc. And a few other nifty little tricks.

Part One:
Go to File -> New
Enter the image size (544x416 if you intend to display your map within a game)
Leave everything else as it is, and press OK

Part Two:
Your layer can not be transparent for the step below... Make sure it is filled with any solid color.
Go to Filters -> Render -> Clouds -> Plasma
Check the Randomize box.
I find that setting the turbulence to somewhere between 2-4 provides the best results.
Press OK

                        At this point, you will have a trippy rainbow mess on your screen . This is the start of our paper.

Click to expand...

Go to Colours -> Desaturate
Choose Luminosity and press OK
Go to Filters -> Artistic -> Clothify
Leave everything as it is, and press OK.

                        Now it's starting to look tad like old parchment eh?

Click to expand...

Part Three:
Go to Colours -> Colourize
Play around with the Hue, Saturation, and Lightness until you get what you're looking for.
Afterwards you can go to Colours -> Brightness-Contrast and tweak it a tad more.

                        At this point you should have super sexy, completely unique PAPER!!
Click to expand...

Now, you create a new layer and repeat the steps above with the new layer. Just ensure that there is a difference in color and/or texture. For this second layer, In addition to Clothify, I also use Canvas [Filters -> Artistic -> Canvas].

After erasing away the ocean and rivers from the second layer (Landmass), you can add a bevel effect to the second layer (the landmass layer) and do any last tweaks to colour/contrast.

That's all!

Experiment a ton! I know there are a bunch of neat things in GIMP for map making that I didn't cover in this tutorial. For example, I've been fiddling around with bump maps lately, to add little valleys and nooks to my maps. Really... the only things set in stone are having a bottom layer, and a top layer. Beyond that, everything is up to you.

Disclaimer! I did this map in a hurry, and ended up doing my main contrast tweaks AFTER applying Clothify... with resulted in very dark dots all over some parts of the map. Oops.

Edit: For typos

Edit: Thanks to GrandmaDeb for letting my know that my links were broken. Turns out I deleted them at some point, and didn't have a backup... so I had to quickly redo the tutorial.
